Per hour of play, the Adidas Barricade 14 costs less than the Nike Vapor 12: €1.95 to €2.60 against €2.65 to €3.55. The two outsoles last about as long. So the €42 gap seen in Belgium pays for something other than lifespan: the Nike's grip and liveliness.

Whether that is worth it depends on your game.

Vapor 12 or Barricade 14: which costs less per hour of play?

The Barricade 14, by roughly 70 to 95 cents an hour. The price that matters is the price per hour of play, and I work it out the same way for every pair: the average price checked in Belgium, divided by the 45 to 60 hours of tennis after which the AAPSM considers the cushioning worn out.

The scores come from our editorial ratings, built from the tests published by RunRepeat, Tennis Warehouse and Tennis Companion. Nobody here has worn either model.

A word on weight, because the table is surprising. On Tennis Warehouse's scale, the two pairs are 14 g apart, and the Adidas is the lighter one. The lightness score, though, clearly separates the two models: it reflects what the tests describe in play, a low-to-the-ground foot and a shoe that responds straight away for the Vapor 12, a support shoe for the Barricade.

Same list price, a €42 gap in the shops

At the prices the brands display, there is no contest: €159.99 for the men's hard court Vapor 12 on nike.com/be, €160 for the Barricade 14 on adidas.be.

The gap opens up at the retailers. The Barricade 14 was seen between €98.90 and €119.90 in men's at Tennis Warehouse Europe depending on the colourway, for a Belgian average of around €117 between June and September 2026. Over the same period, the Vapor 12 stays around €159. It even climbs to €179.99 depending on version and gender.

In other words, the Adidas gets discounted and the Nike holds its price. Over a season, the difference shows:

Your rhythmHours per yearYearly budget in Vapor 12Yearly budget in Barricade 14
1 hour a weekabout 50 h€159 (1 pair)€117 (1 pair)
3 hours a weekabout 150 h€400 to €530€290 to €390
5 hours a week, interclubs includedabout 250 h€660 to €890€490 to €650

At one hour a week, one pair covers the year in both cases, and the AAPSM advises replacing any sports shoe more than a year old anyway. At five hours, the gap goes past €150 a season.

Is the Nike Vapor 12 any good in 2026?

It is the highest-rated shoe in our database: 9.2/10, first in the overall ranking and in the competition ranking.

It owes that place to three scores. Grip first, 9.4/10, the highest of the 37 models we track, with a split herringbone outsole. Then lightness, 9.3/10. And comfort, 8.8/10, thanks to an Air Zoom unit in the heel whose energy return RunRepeat measures as higher than on the Vapor 11. The tests describe a low-to-the-ground feel and no break-in.

Its limit is well known, and Nike owns it. To lighten the model, the brand removed a large part of the rubber, and the Tennis Warehouse review sees the outsole wear smooth in the usual places. Hence 7.2/10 for durability. The toe holds up better than the rest: moulded PU covers the toe cap and the inner edge, where the back foot drags on serve.

The fit is true to size in length and snug in width. No wide version has been identified. The Nike Vapor 12 review covers the model in detail.

Does the Barricade 14 wear through its outsole faster?

Barely, going by the scores: 7.0/10 against 7.2/10. No pair is judged without the lifespan of its outsole, and on that criterion the duel is almost a draw.

The story behind the two scores is not the same. At Nike, everyone agrees: less rubber, so less in reserve. At Adidas, the tests contradict each other. The Barricade 14 left Adiwear for a lighter Lighttraxion rubber, and Tennis Companion saw the outsole wear smooth under the big toe up to the toe cap. Yet in RunRepeat's abrasion test, the same rubber is dented by only 0.6 mm, against an average of 0.8 mm on the same page.

For the cost-per-hour sum, the consequence is the same on both sides. Dividing by 45 to 60 hours assumes the rubber lasts as long as the cushioning. On hard courts, for a player who drags a foot, neither shoe guarantees it, and a pair with a hole at 35 hours costs more per hour than planned: €4.55 for the Vapor 12, €3.35 for the Barricade 14.

The 6-month warranty attached to the Barricade 14 changes nothing here. It belongs to the US retailer Tennis Warehouse, for a purchase made there. The Adidas Barricade 14 review goes over that point.

Speed or stability: two shoes for two games

The Vapor 12 is a speed shoe. The Barricade 14 is a support shoe. Comparing their prices only makes sense once that choice is made.

The Nike wins four criteria out of five. The only one it loses, stability, is the one you buy a Barricade for: 9.3/10, the best score in our database alongside the Asics Gel-Resolution X, achieved with a Torsion chassis and lateral support that the tests describe as the signature of the line. The Barricade 14 also comes in a Wide fit at Tennis Warehouse, which the Vapor 12 does not offer.

A third model serves as a benchmark among speed shoes. The Asics Solution Speed FF 4 weighs 371 g in a US 10.5 and costs around €132 in Belgium, or €2.20 to €2.95 per hour, but its durability drops to 6.2/10. The Vapor 12 vs Solution Speed FF 4 head-to-head compares the two.

On clay, the sum changes

More than eight Belgian courts in ten are clay, according to RTBF. That surface wears the rubber little. From May to September, it is therefore the cushioning that sets the pair's end of life, and the 45 to 60 hours become a solid assumption for both models.

Both exist in a clay version at Belgian retailers: the Vapor 12 at Tennis-Point.be, Passasports, TennisDirect.be and Zalando, the Barricade 14 at Passasports, Zalando and adidas.be. In winter, under a dome or on GreenSet, the rubber goes back to work and the caveats from the previous section return.

The same cost per hour at Nike: the Vapor Pro 3

If cost per hour is what draws you to the Barricade 14, look at the Nike Vapor Pro 3 first. It is seen around €117 in Belgium, exactly like the Adidas, or €1.95 to €2.60 per hour.

At that price, it brings what the other two lack: 8.6/10 for durability, with Hart rubber up to the toe and the eyelets. It keeps 8.8/10 for stability and 8.6 for lightness. Its Air Zoom unit is smaller than the Vapor 12's and it weighs 425 g in a US 10.5.

Which player for which pair?

The choice comes down to your game, then your rhythm:

  • You attack, come to the net and play mostly on clay: Nike Vapor 12. You pay 70 to 95 cents more per hour for the best grip in our database.
  • You play more than three hours a week on hard courts and budget matters: Nike Vapor Pro 3, at the Barricade 14's price and with a better-rated outsole.
  • You defend from far behind the baseline and want maximum lateral support: Adidas Barricade 14, at under €2.60 per hour.
  • You have wide feet: Barricade 14 in Wide. The Vapor 12 is snug.
  • You play one hour a week: the gap comes to €42 a year. Take the one that suits your foot.

The article on cost per hour of play applies the same sum to nine models, the Nike GP Challenge 1.5 vs Adidas Barricade 14 duel deals with lifespan, and the comparison tool lines up all 37 models criterion by criterion.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Which costs less per hour of play, the Nike Vapor 12 or the Adidas Barricade 14?

The Barricade 14: €1.95 to €2.60 per hour against €2.65 to €3.55 for the Vapor 12, based on average prices checked in Belgium between June and September 2026 (€117 and €159) and the AAPSM's 45 to 60 hours of cushioning life. At list price, both are €160 and the cost per hour is identical.

How much does a Nike Vapor 12 cost in Belgium?

Between €159.99 and €179.99 on nike.com/be depending on version and gender, and around €159 as an average price checked at Belgian retailers between June and September 2026. It rarely drops: the gap with the list price is under €1.

Speed or stability: which should you pick for interclub matches?

Speed if you take the ball early and come to the net: the Vapor 12 scores 9.4/10 for grip and 9.3 for lightness. Stability if you defend from well behind the baseline: the Barricade 14 scores 9.3/10 on that criterion. On clay, both exist in a clay court version.

Is a €117 pair or a €159 pair the better buy?

It depends on what the gap buys. Between these two models, it does not buy lifespan: 7.2/10 against 7.0/10 for durability. To pay €117 and gain hours, the Nike Vapor Pro 3 scores 8.6/10 for durability at the same price as the Barricade 14.
